If your domain shows up as locked, it doesn’t always mean it’s lost or that your website has stopped working for good. In many cases, the lock is a security measure or a temporary restriction related to the domain’s renewal, verification, transfer, or configuration.

In this guide, you’ll learn what it means to have a locked domain, what the most common causes are, and what steps to follow to recover it or manage it correctly.

1. Check what type of lock the domain has

The first thing is to identify the reason for the lock. A domain can be locked for several different reasons:

✅ Transfer lock

This is the most common case. It means the domain cannot be transferred to another provider, but it usually keeps working.

It may appear as:

  • clientTransferProhibited
  • Registrar Lock
  • Transfer Lock

📌 What it means: Your domain is protected against unauthorized transfers.

⚠️ Lock due to non-payment or expiration

If the domain wasn’t renewed on time, it may enter a suspended or expired state.

It may appear as:

  • Expired domain
  • Suspended domain
  • Pending renewal
  • Redemption period

📌 What it means: The domain stopped being renewed and it may affect the website, emails, and DNS.

🛠️ Lock due to pending verification

Some domains require verifying the registrant’s email. If verification isn’t completed, the domain may be temporarily suspended.

📌 What it means: You need to confirm the email address associated with the domain.

🚫 Lock due to an administrative issue

In some cases, the domain may be locked due to incorrect data, disputes, recent changes, or requirements from the relevant registry.

📌 What it means: You need to review the registrant’s information or contact support.

2. Access your client area

To check the domain’s status:

  1. Log in to your miHosting client area.
  2. Go to the Domains section.
  3. Select the affected domain.
  4. Check whether any notice appears, such as:
  • Pending payment
  • Expired
  • Locked for transfer
  • Pending verification
  • Renewal required

💡 If the domain has expired, renew it as soon as possible to prevent it from entering advanced recovery phases.

3. Check whether the domain is locked for transfer

If you want to transfer the domain, you may need to unlock it first.

Follow these steps:

  1. Access the domain from your client area.
  2. Look for an option similar to Transfer Lock or Registrar Lock.
  3. Change the status to Unlocked.
  4. Request the EPP code / Auth Code if you want to transfer it.
  5. Wait a few minutes and check the status again.

📌 Important: Some domains cannot be transferred if they were registered or transferred less than 60 days ago, or if there were recent changes to the registrant’s details.

4. Check for outstanding invoices

A locked domain can also be caused by an overdue invoice.

To check:

  1. Log in to your client area.
  2. Go to Billing or My Invoices.
  3. Check whether you have pending payments.
  4. Pay the corresponding invoice.
  5. Wait for the domain to be reactivated.

✅ In many cases, the domain is reactivated automatically after payment. If it isn’t, contact support so they can review the status.

5. Verify the domain registrant’s email

If the lock is related to a pending verification:

  1. Check the email associated with the domain.
  2. Look for verification messages from the registry or provider.
  3. Click the confirmation link.
  4. Wait for the change to propagate.

💡 Also check your spam or junk folder.

If you don’t have access to the registrant’s email, ask support for help updating the domain’s details.

6. Check that the DNS are correct

Sometimes the domain appears “locked,” but the real problem lies with the DNS.

Verify the following:

  1. That the domain has nameservers assigned.
  2. That the DNS correctly point to the hosting.
  3. That the DNS zone exists in cPanel or DirectAdmin.
  4. That no records have been deleted or misconfigured.

A common example:

ns1.yourdomain.com
ns2.yourdomain.com

Or the nameservers provided by miHosting.

📌 If you recently changed the DNS, remember that propagation can take several hours.

Useful tips

✅ Always keep the domain registrant’s email up to date. ✅ Enable automatic renewal if you don’t want to worry about expirations. ✅ Don’t ignore verification or renewal notices. ✅ Before transferring a domain, confirm that it’s unlocked and that you have the EPP code. ✅ If your website and email stopped working, first check the domain’s status and then the DNS.

Don’t forget

A locked domain can be caused by a security measure, a pending renewal, an incomplete verification, or an administrative restriction. The most important thing is to identify the type of lock and act as soon as possible.

If, after following these steps, your domain remains locked, contact the miHosting support team to review the case and help you restore normal operation of your domain, website, and email.
