Learn how miHosting online hard drives work: RAID, FTP and FTPS, transfers, simultaneous connections and important limits.

Introduction

miHosting online hard drives let you store, upload and download files remotely using the space included in your online storage service.

In this article, you will learn the main features of the service: how data is protected with RAID, what to keep in mind about transfer speed, how many simultaneous connections you can use and how to access the service through FTP or FTPS.

The goal is to help you use your online hard drive safely, avoid common mistakes and better understand its technical limits.

How to use your online hard drive

  1. Review the access details sent by miHosting

When you order an online hard drive, you receive a welcome email with the information needed to connect to the service.

    It normally includes:

    • Server or connection address.
    • Username.
    • Password.
    • Access port, if applicable.
    • Instructions for FTP or FTPS.
  2. Connect using FTP or FTPS

You can access your online hard drive through a compatible FTP client.

Although FTP lets you connect and transfer files, FTP connections are not encrypted. Whenever possible, we recommend using FTPS, because it encrypts the connection and protects your data better.

  3. Upload and download files within the contracted space

Inside the space you have contracted, you can upload and download as much information as you need.

Transfers are unlimited within normal use of the service, as long as you stay within the available space of your online hard drive.

  4. Keep the simultaneous connection limit in mind

Each online hard drive allows a maximum of 10 simultaneous connections.

If that limit is exceeded, new connections may not be established until one of the previous connections is closed.

  5. Understand how transfer speed works

Speed can vary depending on the number of active connections.

The available bandwidth is shared across the connections using the online hard drive at that moment. If several people or processes are uploading or downloading files at the same time, each connection may get a smaller share of the total speed.

  6. Avoid creating restricted directories

For technical and security reasons, it is not possible to create these directories:

    • /etc
    • /lib
  7. Use the correct username when working with subaccounts

If you are connecting with a subaccount, you must use the username of that subaccount for the FTP or FTPS connection.

RAID configuration and data protection

miHosting online hard drives are configured on a server with RAID technology.

RAID is a system that combines several physical disks to improve availability and data protection. If one or more disks fail, depending on the applied configuration, the system may continue working and keep the information protected.

This adds an important security layer for storage, especially against physical hardware failures.

Even so, it is important to remember that RAID does not replace a backup. Although miHosting gives maximum importance to data protection, no storage system is completely free from risk.

For that reason, miHosting is not responsible for possible data loss, and we recommend keeping additional copies of the most important information.

Useful tips

  • Use FTPS whenever possible. FTPS encrypts the connection and is safer than traditional FTP.
  • Do not confuse RAID with backup. RAID helps protect against physical disk failures, but it does not prevent human error, accidental deletion or overwriting.
  • Organize your files in clear folders. Use descriptive names and avoid unusual characters.
  • Monitor open connections. If you use automatic synchronization or several connected users, make sure the 10 simultaneous connection limit is not exceeded.
  • Store your credentials safely. If you need to give access to another person, it is better to use a subaccount whenever the service allows it.

Frequently asked questions

Are transfers unlimited

Yes. Inside the contracted space, you can upload and download the information you need without a specific transfer limit.

Can I use FTP to connect

Yes, you can use FTP. However, FTP does not encrypt the connection. For security reasons, we recommend FTPS whenever it is available.

How many people can connect at the same time

Each online hard drive allows up to 10 simultaneous connections. If that limit is reached, some new connections may not be allowed until an active connection is released.

Can I create any folder I want

You can create your own folders to organize files, but creating /etc and /lib is not allowed.

Does RAID mean I do not need backups

No. RAID improves protection against physical disk failures, but it does not replace a backup.

Conclusion

miHosting online hard drives are designed to offer practical remote storage, with unlimited transfers inside the contracted space, FTP and FTPS access, RAID protection and a limit of 10 simultaneous connections per drive.

To use the service safely, we recommend connecting through FTPS, keeping additional copies of your most important data and monitoring the number of active connections.
