In the world of computing, there are two great camps in constant battle: Windows users on one side and the Linux community on the other. These two factions fight almost like in a religious war, and of course, each defends its system as the best.
Over and over again the question arises: Windows or Linux? Which is better? What does Linux offer that Windows doesn’t? Or can Linux offer the convenience that Windows gives me? These are many of the questions our support team faces on a daily basis.
The question about the advantages and disadvantages of an operating system always has two sides, like everything in life. But first, let’s take a look at the advantages of Linux. 🐧
Advantages of Linux
- Free operating system: Linux is free to use. For private users, Linux is a much more cost-effective solution, since many distributions can be downloaded from the internet. This avoids additional licensing costs.
- Security: Due to Linux’s public source code, any security vulnerability can be easily fixed and closed.
- Linux is a joint project: The large number of programmers actively working on Linux ensures faster detection and correction of bugs (hundreds of eyes are better than one). Through a variety of users and the support of major corporations like IBM, development and improvement can move forward.
- Software: Everything we know from Windows/Microsoft is now available for Linux too.
- Linux is vendor-independent: This is a major advantage of Linux compared to Windows. If the chosen distribution doesn’t offer the desired features, the range of alternatives is very broad and you can switch. In contrast, when Microsoft decides to stop supporting a specific version of Windows, you’re generally forced to go with the paid upgrade.
But now let’s move on to the benefits of Windows. 🪟
Advantages of Windows
- Windows can do almost everything and is very beginner-friendly. It requires little user knowledge, and things can be done easily. There’s practically no program that doesn’t run easily on Windows.
- Software selection: There is a wide range of software available for Windows systems. Many applications are available on the web for free, and some applications only require a small licensing fee, provided they’re used privately.
- Sophisticated hardware detection
- Excellent operating system for gamers
- Very good software and hardware support
- Because of its wider adoption, users feel more confident working with Windows systems
- Price: If you believe Microsoft’s marketing slogans, Windows computers are inherently inexpensive, cost-effective, and therefore very affordable, which is especially beneficial for businesses and private users in difficult times. But keep in mind that a Windows server will clearly be more expensive than a Linux server.
And so the eternal battle between Windows and Linux continues! Both systems have their strengths, and the choice ultimately depends on your needs and preferences. 😄👨💻👩💻
