For years, .ml was one of the ccTLDs offered for free by the company Freenom — alongside .tk, .ga, .gq and .cf — which drove its registration volume sharply upward but also fueled large-scale spam and phishing abuse. After Freenom's collapse in 2023, following a lawsuit from Meta over massive abuse of its free domains, management of .ml passed to a new registry operator in July 2023, temporarily suspending new registrations. Service was restored in January 2024 under AGETIC, now on a paid model and without the previous abuse-prone practices. Today registration is open to any individual or company in the world, with no local presence, additional documentation or VAT number required, with names between 3 and 63 characters and no support for internationalized domain names (IDN). One active quirk remains: the registry can remove domains that are not kept linked to a working website.
