Requirements for Registering a .med Domain
Find out who can register a .med domain, what information is needed and which conditions to review before requesting one for a healthcare project.
In this article
To register a .med domain, you need an available name, accurate registrant details and agreement to the registration and use policies. Medistry LLC, which administers this extension, accepts applications from individuals and organisations. Its current public information does not set a general medical-licensing requirement for every applicant.
The extension is intended for the medical and healthcare field. Before registering, distinguish the domain’s requirements from your provider’s checks and from any licence your business activity may require.
Who can register a .med domain?
Medistry allows both individuals and organisations to be registrants. The intended users include healthcare professionals, hospitals, clinics, medical product or service companies, and organisations involved in medical research or education.
The .med Advisory Council says customers of accredited .med registrars should have the opportunity to apply through a non-discriminatory process aligned with the extension’s purpose.
Therefore, using a .med domain should not be treated as proof that its owner’s qualifications have been verified. Check any authorisation to practise healthcare or provide regulated services through the relevant channels.
What you need to apply
Choose an available name
The name must be available for registration. Medistry assigns available names on a first-come, first-served basis. Some names are reserved and cannot be registered through the standard process.
If a name is already registered, choose another or consider purchasing it from its current owner. Buying an existing domain is different from registering an available one.
Also check that the name does not infringe another party’s rights. Availability alone does not rule out a trademark dispute.
Provide complete and accurate details
The registrant is the person or organisation in whose name the domain is registered. Prepare the requested name and contact details, including a working email address and accurate telephone number.
If an agency is registering the domain for your clinic, check who will be listed as the registrant. Read our guide to who owns a domain registered through miHosting.com.
Keep the details up to date and respond to verification requests. It is a good idea to use an email address for notices that does not depend on the domain you are registering.
Accept the applicable terms
The application is handled by a registrar accredited for .med, either directly or through its provider or reseller.
You must accept the service and registration terms, including the .med acceptable use policy. By applying, you confirm that the information you provide is accurate and that registering and using the domain will respect third-party rights.
What documents might be requested?
The Medistry public information reviewed for this guide does not provide a universal list of medical degrees or professional-registration certificates that must accompany every application.
Its registration agreement does allow additional information to be requested to check compliance, both during the application and while you hold the domain. An open registration process therefore does not mean that clarification or evidence can never be requested.
The registrar may also verify your contact details. That check confirms the information associated with the domain; it is separate from proving that you work in healthcare.
If you receive a verification message, follow its instructions within the stated deadline. ICANN says that failing to respond can result in the domain being suspended. If you are unsure about a request, ask your provider what information is needed and how to submit it.
What to check before paying
Check these details for the specific name you want to register:
- Term: Medistry allows .med registrations for one to ten years; confirm which options your provider offers.
- Registration and renewal prices: ask for both prices and check which taxes apply.
- Premium classification: some names have special pricing. Medistry’s terms allow variable renewal prices that may differ from the initial price.
- Registration confirmation: checking availability or placing an order does not mean the domain has been registered. miHosting.com’s domain terms make assignment subject to confirmation of the registration.
Keep the confirmation and check the exact name, registrant and expiry date.
Use requirements to follow
The .med acceptable use policy prohibits, among other things, abusive messaging, distributing malicious software, impersonating others to steal data and infringing third-party rights.
It also treats selling or distributing prescription medicines without a valid prescription as abuse when that violates applicable law.
Medistry may suspend or cancel domains for breaches of its terms, including inaccurate registrant information. These obligations apply throughout the registration period.
