How to Migrate from Squarespace to WordPress
Migrate your website from Squarespace to WordPress: export content, images, 301 redirects and keep your SEO without losing visits.
Introduction
Squarespace is a closed platform: easy to use, but with limitations when your website grows. WordPress gives you total control, more plugins and better SEO. Migration is manual but simple.
Step 1: Install WordPress
Contract hosting (like miHosting’s) and install WordPress.
Step 2: Export content from Squarespace
- Log in to Squarespace → Settings → Advanced → Export.
- Choose WordPress.
- Download the XML file.
Squarespace only allows exporting blog content to WordPress. Static pages must be copied manually.
Step 3: Import into WordPress
- In WordPress: Tools → Import → WordPress.
- Upload the XML file.
- Check download attached images.
Step 4: Recreate static pages
Pages (Home, Services, Contact…) must be created manually in WordPress. Copy the text and recreate the design with your theme.
Step 5: Configure 301 redirects
Squarespace URLs are different from WordPress ones. Use the Redirection plugin to map each old URL to the new one.
Step 6: Change DNS
When everything is ready, change your domain’s DNS to point to the new hosting.
Useful tips
- Download all images from Squarespace before canceling. Once canceled, you lose access.
- List all URLs. To configure redirects.
- Take the opportunity to improve SEO. WordPress is better for SEO than Squarespace.
- Don’t cancel Squarespace until WordPress works.
