How to Recover Abandoned Carts in WooCommerce
Recover lost sales with abandoned carts in WooCommerce: what they are, why they happen and how to set up recovery emails.
Introduction
Did you know that approximately 7 out of 10 shopping carts are abandoned? That is, the customer adds products to the cart but doesn’t complete the purchase. It’s one of the biggest sources of lost sales in any online store.
The good news is that a significant part of those carts can be recovered. In this article you’ll see what an abandoned cart is, why it happens, and how to set up a recovery system in WooCommerce.
What an abandoned cart is
An abandoned cart occurs when a customer:
- Adds one or more products to your store’s cart.
- Reaches the checkout page or stays on the cart.
- Closes the website without completing the purchase.
WooCommerce records that cart and, with the right tools, you can try to get the customer back to complete the purchase.

Why carts are abandoned
Before trying to recover carts, it’s worth understanding why they’re abandoned. The most common causes are:
- High or unexpected shipping costs that appear at the end.
- Checkout process too long or complicated.
- Lack of trust (no SSL, no well-known payment methods).
- The customer gets distracted and closes the site intending to come back later.
- The customer compares prices at other stores.
- Technical errors during payment.
Reducing these causes from the start prevents many abandonments. But even with the best store, there will always be carts to recover.
How to recover abandoned carts in WooCommerce
WooCommerce doesn’t include abandoned cart recovery natively. You need a plugin to manage it. The most widely used are:
- WooCommerce Cart Abandonment Recovery (official, free).
- CartBounty (free and paid versions).
- Abandoned Cart Lite for WooCommerce (free and paid versions).
Start with a free option to test. When you see results, consider whether you need paid features.
Step 1: Install a cart recovery plugin
- Log in to the WordPress admin panel (
yourdomain.com/wp-admin). - Go to Plugins → Add New.
- Search for WooCommerce Cart Abandonment Recovery (or your chosen one).
- Click Install Now and then Activate.

Step 2: Configure cart tracking
The plugin needs to know when a cart is considered “abandoned.” It’s usually defined by time:
- Go to the plugin settings.
- Define the abandonment time: for example, 30 or 60 minutes. If the customer doesn’t complete the purchase in that time, the cart is marked as abandoned.
- Decide whether you want to capture the customer’s email as they fill in the checkout, before paying. This is key to being able to send them the recovery email.
To send recovery emails you need the customer’s email. The plugin captures it automatically when the customer starts typing their email in the checkout form.
Step 3: Create the recovery email sequence
Recovery works by sending emails to the customer inviting them back. A typical sequence is:
Email 1: Reminder (1 hour after abandonment)
Subject: Did you forget something? Your products are waiting
Hi [Name],
We saw you left [Product] in your cart. It's still available.
[Complete my purchase]
If you have any questions, reply to this email.
Email 2: Incentive (24 hours after abandonment)
Subject: Here's 10% off to complete your purchase
Hi [Name],
We don't want you to miss out. Use coupon COMEBACK10 and get 10% off your cart.
[Apply discount and complete my purchase]
Email 3: Last chance (3 days after abandonment)
Subject: Last chance: your cart expires soon
Hi [Name],
Your cart with [Product] will only be available a little longer.
[Complete my purchase before it expires]

Don’t send too many emails. A sequence of 2 or 3 is enough. More can be annoying and generate unsubscribes or spam complaints.
Step 4: Test the recovery
Before trusting the system, test it:
- Create a test account with your own email.
- Add a product to the cart and start checkout.
- Close the site without completing the purchase.
- Wait the configured time and check that you receive the recovery emails.
- Verify that the links work and lead to the cart with the products.
Useful tips
- Reduce the causes of abandonment first. A simple checkout, with clear shipping costs and multiple payment methods, reduces abandonment at the source.
- Personalize emails with the customer’s name. Personalized emails convert more.
- Offer an incentive in the second email. A small discount can be the difference in getting the customer back.
- Measure results. Most plugins show how many carts are recovered and how much money that represents.
- Respect data protection regulations. Always include an unsubscribe link in emails.
Common problems
I don’t capture the customer’s email
To send recovery emails you need the customer’s email. The plugin captures it when the customer types it in checkout. If the customer doesn’t reach that page, you won’t be able to send them an email.
Emails land in spam
Configure your store’s email sending with a reliable method (SMTP). Use a verified domain and avoid spam words in the subject (“free”, “urgent”, etc.).
The customer says they didn’t want the product
Sometimes abandonment is intentional. Don’t insist with too many emails. If the customer doesn’t respond after the sequence, consider that cart lost.
Emails aren’t sent automatically
Check that the plugin is properly configured and that WordPress cron works. Some hostings have limitations with scheduled tasks.
The cart link doesn’t work
Make sure the customer’s session is maintained. If the customer uses another browser or clears cookies, the cart may not be recovered. Some plugins save the cart associated with the email to solve this.
Frequently asked questions
How many carts can be recovered?
It depends on the store and sector, but a good recovery campaign can recover between 10% and 30% of abandoned carts.
Do I need a paid plugin?
No. There are free options that work well to start. Paid plugins add features like SMS, more automations, or integrations with marketing tools.
Is it legal to send recovery emails?
Yes, as long as the customer has agreed to receive communications and there’s an unsubscribe link. Comply with your country’s data protection regulations.
Can I offer a discount automatically?
Yes. Most plugins generate an automatic coupon that’s applied when the customer clicks the email link.
How many emails should I send?
A sequence of 2 or 3 emails is recommended. The first after an hour, the second the next day with an incentive, and optionally a third after 3 days.
Recover sales you were losing
The abandoned cart is one of the biggest sources of lost sales, but also one of the most recoverable. With a good plugin, a well-designed email sequence, and a small incentive, you can recover a significant portion of customers who left without buying.
