How to Configure Shipping in WooCommerce Step by Step

Set up shipping zones, flat rates, free shipping and local pickup in WooCommerce to ship your products without errors.

Introduction

Properly configuring shipping is one of the things that most influences whether a customer completes the purchase or abandons the cart. A customer who doesn’t understand how much shipping will cost, or who sees an unexpected charge at the end, usually closes the purchase.

In this article you’ll see how to configure shipping methods in WooCommerce clearly: zones, rates, free shipping and local pickup.

How shipping works in WooCommerce

WooCommerce organizes shipping through zones. A zone is a group of countries, regions or postal codes to which you apply specific shipping rules.

For example, you could have:

  • Zone 1: Mainland Spain → shipping €4.95.
  • Zone 2: Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla → shipping €8.95.
  • Zone 3: Europe → shipping €12.
  • Zone 4: Rest of the world → shipping €25.

Within each zone you can define several shipping methods: flat rate, free shipping, local pickup or weight-based calculation.

Types of shipping methods available

WooCommerce includes these basic methods:

MethodWhat it’s for
Flat rateA fixed cost per order, regardless of the number of products
Free shippingApplies when a condition is met (minimum amount or coupon)
Local pickupThe customer picks up the order at your store or warehouse
Weight-based calculation (with extension)The cost depends on the total weight of the order

Weight-based calculation isn’t active by default. You can enable it with the free WooCommerce Shipping plugin or by calculating rates per shipping class.

Step 1: Create a shipping zone

  1. Log in to the WordPress admin panel (yourdomain.com/wp-admin).
  2. Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping.
  3. Click Add shipping zone.

  1. Fill in the details:
    • Zone name: for example, “Mainland Spain”.
    • Zone regions: select the countries, states or postal codes that belong to this zone.
  2. Click Save changes before adding methods.

Step 2: Add shipping methods to the zone

Once the zone is created, add the methods you want to offer:

  1. In the zone you just created, find the Shipping methods section.
  2. Click Add shipping method.
  3. Choose the type: flat rate, free shipping or local pickup.
  4. Click Add method.

Repeat this step for each method you want to offer in that zone.

Step 3: Configure the flat rate

The flat rate is the most used method because it’s simple for both the customer and you.

  1. Click Edit on the flat rate method.
  2. Enter the shipping cost, for example 4.95.
  3. Configure the Cost type field:
    • None: always the same price.
    • Per product: adds a cost for each product in the cart.
    • Per class: different cost depending on the product’s shipping class.
  4. Save the changes.

Shipping classes

If you sell products of different sizes or weights, shipping classes let you assign a different cost to each type of product. For example:

  • “Small” class → €2.
  • “Medium” class → €5.
  • “Large” class → €10.

To create them, go to WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping → Shipping classes and then assign the corresponding class to each product from its product page.

Step 4: Configure free shipping

Free shipping is a great incentive for the customer to buy more. WooCommerce allows you to configure it in two ways:

  1. Free shipping with minimum purchase: for example, free over €50.
  2. Free shipping with coupon: the customer needs a coupon to activate it.

To configure it:

  1. Add the Free shipping method to your zone.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. In Minimum amount for free shipping, enter the amount, for example 50.
  4. Save the changes.

Free shipping doesn’t mean transportation is free for you. It means you absorb the cost to encourage the purchase. Calculate your margin well before activating it.

Step 5: Configure local pickup

Local pickup is useful if you have a physical store or a pickup point.

  1. Add the Local pickup method to your zone.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Mark the method as active.
  4. Define the price (it can be 0 if it’s free).
  5. Write clear text in Description, for example: “Pick up your order at our Madrid store”.
  6. Save the changes.

Step 6: Define general shipping options

Under WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping → Shipping options you can configure:

  • Shipping calculation: enable the “Enable the shipping calculator on the cart page” checkbox.
  • Show shipping costs: show available methods from the start.
  • Shipping destination: whether the customer ships to an address different from the billing one.

These options improve the customer experience during checkout.

Useful tips

  • Be transparent with costs. Showing shipping costs from the cart reduces abandonment.
  • Use free shipping carefully. Absorb the cost only if your margin allows it. Otherwise, use a reasonable minimum purchase.
  • Create shipping classes if you sell very different products. A book and a piece of furniture shouldn’t have the same shipping cost.
  • Test your configuration. Run test orders with different products, weights and destinations to verify the calculations are correct.
  • Clearly state delivery times. Customers value knowing whether it takes 24 hours or 5 days. You can add it in each method’s description.

Common problems

No shipping method appears at checkout

The most common cause is that you haven’t created a zone covering the customer’s region, or the zone has no active methods. Check that the customer’s country or postal code is included in a zone.

Free shipping always appears, even when the minimum isn’t reached

Check that you’ve set the correct minimum amount in the free shipping method. An empty or zero field activates free shipping always.

Weight-based costs aren’t calculated correctly

Make sure each product has its weight indicated on the product page. If a product has no weight, weight-based calculation fails.

The customer can choose two methods at once

It’s not possible to choose two at once, but several can be shown. WooCommerce displays all available methods for their zone. If you want to hide others when free shipping is available, you can use a plugin like “WooCommerce Free Shipping Methods”.

Rates don’t update after changing them

Clear the WooCommerce cache and your optimization plugin’s cache. Some caching systems store the checkout page and don’t reflect the changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I offer free shipping only to one zone?

Yes. You configure free shipping within the specific zone. The rest of the zones keep their normal rate.

Can I connect WooCommerce with a shipping carrier?

Yes. There are official and third-party extensions to integrate with carriers and calculate shipping in real time based on weight and destination. Each extension depends on the carrier you use.

Does free shipping increase sales?

It usually does, especially when associated with a minimum purchase. Many customers add one more product to reach free shipping.

Can I assign a different cost to each product?

Yes, using shipping classes. Assign a class to each product and configure a different cost per class in each zone.

Does WooCommerce calculate tax on shipping?

It depends on the configuration. Under WooCommerce → Settings → Tax you can indicate whether shipping carries tax or not.

Well-configured shipping, more sales

A good shipping configuration in WooCommerce prevents customer surprises, reduces cart abandonment and helps you control your logistics costs. Create your zones, define the methods for each, use classes when you sell different products, and always test the checkout process before opening to the public.
